Not all of the village ordinances are presented here. Only the ones that the police deal with the most. Please contact the Village Hall if you need actual copies of ordinances. Parking ticket fines are payable at the police station only on a 24 hour basis. Have the exact amount with you. We do not make change.

When you get a parking ticket: The first thing you need to do when you receive a parking ticket is to look at it and see what the violation is. One of the biggest complaints we get is when someone calls and gets permission to park on the street overnight and finds a ticket on their windshield the next morning. They call and complain without looking at the ticket, which is usually for not displaying a village vehicle tax sticker. Overnight parking permission does not give blanket coverage over other violations.

Officers are instructed to write p-tickets for ordinance violations whenever a violation is observed. The time of day is irrelevant. If you want to protest a  parking ticket, you must come to the police station and fill out a "Citation Review Request" form. It will do you no good to discuss your case with the officer who wrote the ticket, nor the communications person at the window. The form you fill out will be reviewed by command personnel, and you will be notified by mail of the final decision.

Vehicle License Tags
Vehicle license tags are required if you reside in Island Lake. If you lease a vehicle, you are still required to have a vehicle sticker. It is surprising the great lengths people will go to in order to get out of purchasing a vehicle sticker, and manufacture many inane excuses to accomplish this objective. You must purchase and DISPLAY a vehicle sticker if:

        1) You live in the village
        2) You park your vehicle overnight in the village for more than 30 days
        3) You have resided in the village for more than 30 days

(Note: These conditions do not apply to vehicles rented while your vehicle is being repaired.)

The purpose behind vehicle stickers is to provide revenue to keep our streets maintained. Stickers can be purchased at the Village Hall, 3720 Greenleaf Ave., between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and 8:00 AM to Noon on Saturday. The following rates apply:

Passenger vehicles for private use and trucks under 1.5 ton capacity
$20.00
Freight or merchandise carrying vehicles 1.5 to 2 ton capacity
$17.00
over 2 tons (parking locations are restricted)
$22.00
Motorcycles and motor scooters
$15.00
Public passenger vehicles with a capacity of over seven persons (motor buses)
$32.00
Public passenger vehicles having a capacity of seven persons or less
$17.00
Other vehicles
$27.00

The sticker must be displayed and permanently affixed to the lower right hand corner of the windshield. This is the only way we will know whether or not you purchased a sticker if you are not there to produce a receipt. If you don't display it, you may still get a ticket, even though you actually purchased one. A $20.00 late fee is assessed after the deadline purchase date of  February 14th. No Parking Zones
No parking zones are regulated with signs. It is very difficult not to recognize a no parking area. The signs are white with red lettering that read "NO PARKING ANY TIME".

Fire Lanes
A fire lane is exactly what the name implies. Usually there are signs that read "NO PARKING - FIRE LANE", and the pavement is usually painted with the same message. Yes, we know people park in fire lanes all the time, and we write tickets for this violation. But, if a fire actually occurs, your vehicle will be either blocked in, towed, or subject to damage caused by the fire itself. You are better off not parking in a fire lane.

Handicapped Parking
Everyone should know by now what a handicapped parking zone looks like. For those who don't, a handicapped parking area is marked with a sign that has a blue background and a white wheelchair symbol. The pavement in the parking space is sometimes painted blue with the wheelchair symbol also. Unless you have an authorized handicapped parking permit or license plates, you may not park there. The fines are steep for violating these reserved parking areas.

Overnight Street Parking
Parking on the streets within the village between the hours of 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM is prohibited without prior consent from the police department. Habitual on-street parking will require a valid explanation. The fact that you have too many cars in your family to fit them all in your driveway is not a valid reason. Parking permission will not be granted in adverse weather conditions; i.e., snowfall over one inch expected.

Special Note: The police department no longer enforces overnight parking in the following areas; Southport Village townhomes, Nantucket Village townhomes, and Westridge townhomes. However, if you park on the street in these areas, you must be aware that, 1) You must have and display a current village vehicle tax sticker, and 2) You may not park in any area designated a fire lane.

Restricted Parking
It is unlawful to park any vehicle within fifteen (15) feet of any fire hydrant, and thirty (30) feet of any stop sign, or any other official traffic control device. Parking in an area designated "NO PARKING BY POLICE ORDER" will result in your vehicle being towed at your expense, plus the fine.
Abandoned/Junk Vehicles
Definition by ordinance: An abandoned vehicle is any vehicle in a state of disrepair rendering the vehicle incapable of being driven in it's condition; or any vehicle that has not been used or moved for five (5) consecutive days or more and is apparently deserted; but in the case of watercraft, any watercraft that has not been moved or used during the previous boating season. (Ord. 726, 12-14-89)

A junk(ed) vehicle is that which is of no use or little value.

Procedure: A police officer will attempt to make contact with the owner of the property on which the vehicle is parked; not necessarily the vehicle owner(s) themselves. The property owner is responsible for the condition of the vehicle.  A letter of warning for the violation will be send to the property owner. After thirty (30) days a second notice will be sent. After an additional fourteen (14) days, citations will be issued. A total of three (3) separate tickets for each vehicle in violation may be issued with fines ranging from $25.00 to $100.00. If the ordinance violation is not then corrected, a Notice to Appear in court will be issued. The NTA carries a fine of $750.00, and a warrant may also be issued for non-compliance.

Save yourself a lot of aggravation and get rid of your abandoned/junk vehicle.

Snow Removal
Parking on the street after one inch of snowfall is prohibited. Road crews have been instructed to call the police department in the event they find a vehicle parked in such a manner as impedes their plowing efforts. If we are unable to contact you, your vehicle is subject to being towed.
Open Burning
Fires other than those used for cooking such as bonfires, leaf burning, burning of trash is strictly prohibited. Special permits can be obtained for the burning of certain construction materials through the building inspector's office.
Other Parking Ticket Offenses
